The Philosophy Behind EntropicTees Arbitrary Fashion
When asked about his graduate training at the Sorbonne, French philosopher Gilles Deleuze once commented that the motivating vision of his student years was "to mount Kant from behind and give him a child that was most certainly his own, yet monstrous." Without question, Freddy Benstein of Entropic Tees is Deleuze to the "cheekier than thou" T-shirt industry's Kant. His designs capture the absurdity of the commodification of the human torso with the exacting precision we've come to expect from the finest reproductions of bowling team and carpet-cleaning t-shirts from the 1970's, and yet he defiantly refuses to resort to the misanthropic flights into irony, anomie, and listlessness that these bourgeois degradations of proletariat earnestness so often indulge. His humanizing realization that absurdity is a function of incomplete context rather than sheer randomness serves as a heartening reminder that acerbic wit and a redemptive embrace of human frailty are not only compatible, but complementary. Thus, though I believe that the aforementioned analogy to Deleuze is apropos, it is my sincerest hope, in the name of truth in T-shirt making, that Benstein will resist the Deleuzian urge to suicide by defenestration. |
