Canada Puts US on Torture List, Then Removes
In January, a Canadian government issued training manual listed the United States (among several others) as a country where prisoners could possibly face torture. Futhermore, it singled out the US prison in Guantanamo Bay as a site of possible torture. The other countries included in the list were Israel, Afghanistan, Egypt, China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Syria. Of course, the US was outraged at this and after some pressure, the Canadian government decided to remove at least the United States from the list. The Canadian statement was as follows: "[The manual] does not convey the governments views or positions. [...it] wrongly includes some of our closest allies." The American outrage was summed up by US ambassador, David Wilkins: "We find it to be offensive for us to be on the same list with countries like Iran and China. Quite frankly it's absurd [...] For us to be on a list like that is just ridiculous." I must completely agree with Mr. Wilkins statement. It is offensive, absurd and ridiculuos to be included on such a list. The US has not had that reputation in the past. I wish Mr. Wilkins had gone a step further and said that we must examine carefully our international policies and re-evaluate them in order to understand how we have fallen so far, stooped so low to be included on such a list, whether by honest mistake or not. |
